New England Weavers Seminar (NEWS) is an organization of many weaving guilds in the New England area. These guilds combine their resources to produce a 3 day weaving and fiber conference every "odd" year.
Old friends gather to celebrate their love of fiber and weaving and to meet new friends.
The conferences feature some 30 to 40 workshops and seminars given by internationally known faculty.
All members of participating guilds are invited to submit items to the juried gallery shows where both functional and purely decorative items are featured.
Entries are eligible for any one of a number of awards many of which include cash prizes and gift certificates.
A highlight of NEWS is the juried fashion show, also open to all guild members. Submissions range from scarves to jackets and entire ensembles.
Fashion show entries are also eligible for a number of awards.
Participants are also welcome to strut their creations at an informal fashion show.
Member guilds offer special exhibits, often with interesting and unusual themes.
A number of vendors from all over the country participate and offer their goods and services to conference participants.
NEWS is attended by over 250 registered participants. The exhibits and vendor areas are open for free to the public.
The next conference will be in July 2009 at Smith College in Northampton MA.
